One mainstream explanation, the “many-worlds” interpretation, states that there are an infinite number of universes (the “multiverse”). Everything that can possibly happen occurs in some universe. The old mechanical — “we’re just a bunch of atoms” −- view of life loses its grip in these scenarios.

Biocentrism extends this idea, suggesting that life is a flowering and adventure that transcends our ordinary linear way of thinking. Although our individual bodies are destined to self-destruct, the “me” feeling is just energy operating in the brain.

Hardly a new theoretical model for life and consciousness, but I still cannot escape the discomfort I get reading treatises on death and dying, even by medical doctors, that make broad and overly convenient appeals to quantum mechanics, which is a profoundly complex discipline, and little understood by anyone outside the field of theoretical physics. My other problem with the piece is that, and maybe I need to read/reflect on it a bit harder, the lengthy (and sad) tale of his sister seems to bear little relationship with the premise of his piece. Maybe it’ll make more sense to you.
