We’re warming slowly to Paranormal Challenge, certainly not beecause we think Zack Bagans has finally sworn off the ‘roids (since it’s pretty obvious he hasn’t), but mostly because it gives us a chance to see how other paranormal teams do their thing. Some are truly hapless – obvious products of the “can you give us a sign of your presence” rote scripting that so many young teams have picked up from GH or other TV shows , or utterly sad with the equipment, like the guy who recently placed a digital voice recorder and then forgot to turn it on – but a few teams have impressed us with subtle things like investigator positioning and inventive EVP prompting.
We’re still skeptical of the evidence-as-points scored thing. We still think we know practically nothing about how or why or when spirits may provide evidence of their presence, so dinging a group because their evidence sucked really isn’t fair.
We think we’d rock on this program. But being kinda old, and just being two of us, they’d never enlist us. Plus…it’d be kinda hard to get into that competitive, team-spirit thing. We still regard this as a delicate and almost reverential enterprise – seeking contact with the dead – so it’s a challenge to wish another team ill in this common pursuit.
Bagans, in fact, is probably the most consistent irritant on the show, with his over-the-top dramatics and squad-leader mission briefings. Seriously, the guy could do with a little lightening-up.
We were pleased to see one of the guys from Paranormal Cops show, sadly and recently cancelled, as one of the judges on last week’s episode. Their show, as well as Ghost Lab, we were particularly fond of.
